Unny’s Surgery Update 1
Submitted by: Unny’s friend, Diane Cullumber
Unny’s Kidney donation surgery was a success and he is in recovery. This is the first update including the pre-op process as relayed by Unny’s friend, Matt Schroeder.
Unny was up early this morning and feeling a normal amount of anxiety/nerves associated with his kidney donation surgery. Matt shared a little bit about how the pre-op time went.
4:25 AM: Unny arrives at the hospital.
4:40 AM: Unny meets one of his pre-op nurses and is taken back to the pre-op room, where he puts on a gown into which warm air is pumped.
5:10 AM: Unny receives his main IV.
5:45 AM: A series of people begin coming by -- a surgical fellow and three anesthesiology staff -- who explain the procedure. To reduce his pain, they will put in a nerve block during the surgery. This is an injection of anesthetic into the abdomen that will make him more comfortable while the oral anti-pain medication is getting into his system. And to prevent post-anesthesia nausea/vomiting, they give him a scopolamine patch (a sticker behind his ear that delivers medicine), and they will also give him anti-nausea medicine through his IV to prevent nausea/vomiting.
6:25 AM: Unny is wheeled back to surgery, right on schedule!
11:00 AM : We receive word that the surgery was a success and he is in recovery. He will soon be assigned a room.
Diane will be able to visit and share more details about how he is doing. Thank you all for your warm wishes and care of Unny today and throughout this journey.
